Abstract
Prevalence of foodborne bacterial pathogens from the intestinal tract of students of Fidei Polytechnic Gboko, Benue State was studied. A total of fifty (50) samples were analyzed using the standard plate count technique. A total of seven bacteria species were isolated. These include Escherichia coli, Salmonella spp, Vibro cholera, Shigella spp, Pseudomonas spp, Streptococcus feacalis and Enterobacter aerogenes. Among the isolated Escherichia coli has the highest prevalence of 28(56%), followed by Salmonella spp 23 (46%) then Pseudomonas spp and Enterobacter aerogenes had a prevalence of 22 (44%) and 22 (44%) respectively. Then Shigella 15 (30%) and lastly Streptococcus feacalis with a prevalence of 11 (22%). The presence of these bacteria species indicates foodborne diseases. This could be the possible cause of diarrhea abdominal pain, and nosocomial among others. It is recommended that standard hygienic practices and sanitary measures should be ensured by the students under study.   ...
