Knowledge perception and preventive practice of malaria control strategies among residents of Owerri west lga

Abstract
Malaria remains a significant global health challenge, especially in sub-Saharan Africa. Despite numerous studies on knowledge and preventive practices, the disease persists. This study aimed to assess the knowledge and preventive practices related to malaria control in Owerri West LGA. Using a descriptive cross-sectional design, 426 residents were surveyed, and data were analyzed with SPSS version 23.0. The study found that 97.5% of respondents were aware of malaria. Regarding the perception of malaria control strategies, 28.2% believed in the effectiveness of Insecticide Treated Nets (ITNs) for prevention. Preventive practices included 35.6% using mosquito repellent and 26.9% using ITNs, with others adopting different methods. Barriers to ITN use included cost and inconvenience. The study revealed significant associations between knowledge of malaria control and socio-demographic factors: age, occupation, income level, and education level. In conclusion, most respondents in Owerri West LGA had good knowledge of malaria prevention. To improve preventive practices, the government should consider subsidizing mosquito nets to make them accessible to all. ...
