Factor responsible for under-utilization of primary health care centre among pregnant women in Alanamu health centre, Ilorin, Kwara state

Abstract
According to National Primary Health Care Development Agency, Abuja, Nigeria despite extensive investments, the country still has insufficient healthcare delivery infrastructures, poor quality healthcare services and unevenly distributed human resource capacity. Going by the above, the reason for undergoing this research is to identify factors responsible for underutilization of primary health care among pregnant women with a view to access their knowledge on the risk of underutilization of primary health care services. The research was carried out using qualitative study design to research and identify factors that affect the utilization of Primary Health Care services by pregnant women. The study population is made up of selected facility staff and pregnant women attending antenatal including nursing mothers who used the facility during the antenatal within the last 6 months and those within the community that are not using the facility. The results obtained reveal that not attending primary health center during pregnancy can predispose the mother and baby to infection as the results indicated that 25.3% of the respondents agreed and 57.3% strongly agreed. The study concluded that the factors responsible for the underutilization of primary health centre are poor quality of health services, poor attitude of health workers, lack of confidentiality, culture and belief, and educational status. The required factors for improved utilization of primary health centre are the provision of health insurance, reduced cost of living, availability of skilled personnel and retaining of staff, availability of basic amenities like water and electricity and provision of effective focused ANC....
