Abstract
Vitamin A deficiency in early life has long-lasting and irreversible consequences, and it is estimated to be the cause of nearly half of the blindness in children under the age of five Infants are born with negligible liver stores of vitamin A. To enable some storage of the vitamin, the infant needs to be predominantly breastfed with milk containing at least 30 µg/dl. Where vitamin A in breast milk is low, maternal supplementation with a single postpartum high dose increases milk vitamin A for three to eight months.. This led to the investigation of the knowledge of nursing mothers attending the immunization clinic of UNIDELTH Agbor, Delta state on causes and preventions of Vitamin A deficiency among children aged 6-24 months. Descriptive research of quantitative type was adopted. The population comprises all nursing mothers attending the immunization clinic of UNIDELTH, Agbor. Using Cochran formula of unknown population, (68) participants were sampled for the study. A research structured questionnaire which was validated by the research supervisor was adopted. The data collected in the study were analysed using the descriptive statistics of both frequency count and percentage for the demographic data and research question and ANOVA (analysis of variance) was used to analyze the hypotheses postulated for this study at 0.05 alpha level. Based on the findings, It was recommended that (a) a Periodic sensitization campaign should be carried out at the grassroots (social gatherings in communities) so as to educate the people most especially women about the importance of giving vitamin A-fortified food to children (b)Government and its agencies should pay attention to those environmental factors that might increase the risk of children Vitamin deficiency....
