Abstract
This study was on the knowledge and perception of youths on the effects of substance abuse on the kidney at the school complex, University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, Ilorin, Kwara State. Substance abuse is a pattern of harmful use of any substance for mood-altering purposes. The objective of the study was to determine the types of substances commonly abused by youths in the school complex, UITH that could lead to kidney disease, to determine the knowledge of youths in the school complex, UITH on substance abuse, to determine the perception of youths in the school complex, UITH on the effect of substance abuse on the kidney and to determine knowledge of youths on ways to reduce the negative effects of substance abuse on the kidney. Quantitative research design using a descriptive method was used for the study. A sample size of 83 respondents was used for the study which was calculated from the target population of 651 using Fischer’s formula. A self-designed questionnaire was used to collect data from the respondents and data were analyzed using SPSS 23. This research affirmed that the majority of the students know that substance abuse can lead to kidney damage or kidney failure, that alcohol can have harmful effects on the kidney, tobacco can have harmful effects on the kidney, that cannabis (Marijuana) can have harmful effects on the kidney, that stimulant drug (cocaine, amphetamines) can have harmful effects on the kidney, that opioids (heroin, prescribed painkillers) can have harmful effects on the kidney, that kidney inflammation is an effect of substance abuse on the kidney, that decreased kidney function is an effect of substance abuse on the kidney and that kidney stones is an effect of substance abuse on the kidney....
