Abstract
Patient lifting generally refers to repositioning the patient while lying in bed, helping the patient move on the bed, lifting the patient, and between a wheelchair, bed, hoist, or trolley, and these tasks may increase the risk of back, neck and shoulder pain for the caregiver. The objectives of this study are to assess the perceived effect of patient lifting on nurses, identify the perceived factors influencing the effects associated with patient lifting on nurses, and assess the intervention to reduce the perceived effect of patient lifting among nurses at the University of Delta Teaching Hospital, Agbor, Delta State. A descriptive research design was used using a quantitative design method and 118 respondents were chosen using a purposive sampling technique and self-structured questionnaires were used to collect data for this study. Validity and reliability of the instrument were ascertained before administering it to the respondents. SPSS(version 22) was used for data analysis with descriptive statistics presented in the form of frequency table and percentage. Findings reveal that the majority of the respondents (57.6%) agreed that implementing ergonomic considerations, such as adjustable beds and furniture, can help reduce the perceived effect of patient lifting. Additionally, 41.5% strongly agreed with this statement. A very small percentage (0.8%) disagreed. The mean score of 1.59 indicates an overall agreement that ergonomic considerations can positively impact the perceived effects of patient lifting. In conclusion, this study provided insights into the demographic characteristics and experiences of nursing professionals in patient lifting, which adds to the understanding of the challenges faced by healthcare providers and also underscores the need for comprehensive interventions to enhance patient care and the well-being of healthcare workers....
