Abstract
Child immunization is a critical public health intervention that protects children from preventable diseases. However, low immunization coverage remains a challenge in many developing countries, including Nigeria. This study investigated child immunization service utilization and the challenges faced by mothers with under-five children in Bida Local Government Area of Niger State, Nigeria. A mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews, was employed to comprehensively explore the factors influencing immunization practices and the challenges encountered by mothers in accessing and utilizing immunization services for their under-five children. The study found that low child immunization coverage in Bida Local Government Area is attributed to a multifaceted array of factors, including a lack of awareness about the importance of child immunization, inadequate accessibility to immunization centers and services, misperceptions and misconceptions about the safety and effectiveness of vaccines, insufficient healthcare infrastructure and resources, and cultural and religious beliefs that discourage vaccination. The study also found that a range of challenges are faced by immunization service providers in accessing children for immunizations, including insufficient outreach programs and community engagement, lack of transportation and long distances to immunization centers, inadequate trained healthcare personnel and resources, poor record-keeping and data management, and limited awareness and education among mothers about the immunization schedule and the importance of completing the vaccination series. The study's findings underscore the complex interplay of factors that contribute to low child immunization coverage in Bida Local Government Area of Niger State. Addressing these challenges requires a multi-pronged approach that encompasses targeted interventions to enhance awareness, improve accessibility, address cultural sensitivities, strengthen healthcare infrastructure, and empower mothers with knowledge and support...
