Abstract
This mixed-methods study explored the current and future roles of Health Information Management (HIM) professionals in using Geographical Information Systems (GIS) for quality patient care. Specific objectives were to identify GIS benefits for quality care, examine factors affecting GIS use at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, and address the financial implications of GIS hardware and software. Questionnaires collected data on GIS use and impacts. Hypotheses testing showed significant relationships between HIM professionals’ GIS use and quality care. Of 62 respondents, 64.5% currently use GIS all agreed GIS impacts care quality. However, only 80.6% have qualified GIS staff 19.4% lack properly trained personnel. Although few HIM professionals presently use GIS or receive GIS training, interest is strong for the future. Recommendations include: improving healthcare financing for economic development establishing hospital protocols for GIS data and service quality collaborating between Nigeria’s National Health Policy and State Government on GIS implementation of health strategies employing qualified HIM staff to manage GIS use and providing regular GIS seminars, workshops and training to improve efficiency.  In conclusion, GIS offers benefits for patient care quality and HIM professionals see growing roles in applying this technology. Strategic investments in equipment, software, and HIM staff with GIS skills will maximize the quality of care advances from GIS adoption. Partnerships between healthcare administration and government policymakers can propel the standardized GIS integration necessary for consistent care quality improvements nationwide....
