Barriers to utilization of nursing process in patient care among nurses in Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital Nnewi

Abstract
This study assessed the barriers to the utilization of the nursing process in patient care among nurses at the University of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi. Three objectives guided the study. The study adopted descriptive design. The sample of 209 nurses was determined using Taro Yamane and selected using convenience sampling technique. Data were analyzed using frequencies and percentages and presented in tables. The findings showed the major institutional related barriers were a shortage of nursing staff 128(78 ) excess workload on nurses 126(76.8 ) lack of equipment and inadequate material supplies necessary for the implementation of the nursing process 100(60.9 ) and lack of motivation of nurses 88(53.7 ). For nurse-related barriers: 88(53.7%) indicated inadequate training and teachings on the nursing process, 62(37.8%) said lack of evaluation action based on the nursing process, and 102(62.2%) claimed lack of teamwork among nurses. On patient-related barriers: 114(69.5%) indicated poor cooperation from patients, 108(65.5%) claimed poor patient-nurse working relationship, 94(57.3%) said language barrier, and 84(51.2%) indicated length of hospitalization of patients (sudden change in patients condition). It was recommended that the hospital management should employ more nurses to reduce the excess workload and also provide resources and materials necessary for the implementation of the nursing process. Incentives and appraisals should be used to motivate the nurses for better practice. The manager should also organize seminars and conferences annually in order to improve the skills, and knowledge of the nursing process and nursing practice in general....
