Abstract
Excessive wait times in healthcare delivery adversely impact patient satisfaction and health outcomes. This study evaluated prolonged waiting as a determinant of patient satisfaction at the outpatient department of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital in Nigeria. A descriptive cross-sectional survey design was implemented, with 50 randomly selected patients completing structured questionnaires. Analysis revealed the primary drivers of extended waits were misplaced records (28%) and unconcerned employee attitudes (20%), while consequences included damaged institutional reputation (28%) and a 20% drop in attendance. Proposed managerial solutions encompassed hiring adequate staff (40%), creating an oversight committee (22%), and optimizing processes (20%). Patients suggested improving appointment scheduling (24%) and accelerating service delivery (16%). The chi-square test found waiting times significantly decreased patient satisfaction, confirming the hypothesis. Recommendations include recruiting skilled professionals to streamline operations and reduce delays, instituting a committee to monitor outpatient service quality, and offering patient accommodations like entertainment to improve the waiting experience.  In summary, this study conclusively established that excessive waiting times considerably impact patient perceptions of care quality and satisfaction. Hospital administrators must prioritize interventions that promote efficient patient throughput like proper staffing ratios, strengthened supervision infrastructure, and customer service-oriented facilities. Investing in these areas will curtail delays and signal to patients their time and well-being are valued priorities. Further research can support quality improvement initiatives to address this critical service delivery challenge....
