Abstract
Background: This study addresses a crucial issue related to waste management, particularly in healthcare settings in Anambra State, Nigeria. Effective waste management is indeed essential for environmental protection and public health, especially considering the challenges posed by various types of waste, including medical waste and the impacts of events like the COVID-19 pandemic. The involvement of authorities like the Anambra State Waste Management Authority (ASWAMA) is vital in addressing these challenges and ensuring better waste management practices for the benefit of the community. Objectives: The study aimed to assess the knowledge of waste management, examine healthcare workers’ perception of its management and determine waste management practices in Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi, Anambra state. Methods A descriptive cross-sectional study design was used. Results: The study focused on healthcare workers, mostly doctors, nurses, medical laboratory scientists, pharmacists, radiographers and physiotherapists in Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi, Anambra state. This revealed that they have good knowledge of waste management, with 87.7% having good perception towards it, but however, there should be more need for education on waste management and hygiene around the hospital. Conclusion: The findings from this study revealed that majority of the healthcare workers are unaware of the modern and standard methods utilized in hospital waste management practice as they have not undergone in-service training on medical waste management even though they exhibit good knowledge and practice of the subject matter. ...
