Abstract
Patient satisfaction is the extent to which the patients feel that their needs and expectations are being met by the services provided just before, during and after the course of their clinical visit. Assessment of patient satisfaction is necessary because of the need to incorporate feedback from patient surveys into service improvement plans. This study aims to assess patient satisfaction among those attending outpatient clinics in Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi, Anambra State. The study was a descriptive cross-sectional study using a self-administered questionnaire. A multistage sampling technique was used on 180 patients. Data was collected on the socio-demographic factors and on patient satisfaction with the hospital environment and with healthcare workers and the quality of services rendered to them and analyzed using the SPSS version 25.0. The results showed that the majority of the respondents were satisfied with the cleanliness of the hospital environment(77.78%), availability of signs and directions(65.56%) and fairly constant power supply(76.67%) Most of the patients were not satisfied with the cleanliness of the toilets and the clinical waiting time. Majority were also satisfied with the professionalism of the doctors(84.45%), nurses(72.78%), pharmacists(69.44%), laboratory scientists(65.56%) and records department staff(66.11%). Those 38 years and below, females, married respondents, and those who had tertiary education and were self-employed had the most excellent satisfaction. This study shows that a good number of the patients were satisfied with the hospital environment and the services rendered to them. Patients were mostly dissatisfied with the clinical waiting time and the cleanliness of the toilets. However, there should be periodic surveys on patient satisfaction and patient feedback systems to ensure the optimal delivery of quality health services and medical care. ...
