Abstract
As healthcare becomes increasingly digitized, this study investigated the influence of information and communication technologies (ICT) and social media adoption on healthcare information management (HIM) professionals at Federal Medical Centre Asaba, Nigeria. Using a descriptive research approach, self-administered questionnaires were distributed to 54 randomly selected HIM staff. The objectives were to examine ICT and social media utilization rates, uses, benefits, and ultimately impacts on HIM performance. Key findings revealed high adoption rates (approximately 85%) demonstrating ICT's integral role. However, flaws around costs, cybersecurity, and the human factor presented notable challenges to optimal utilization. Regarding impacts, approximately 95% reported enhanced productivity and information access/sharing indicating ICT's advantages in supporting HIM processes. To statistically analyze technology's effects, chi-square hypothesis testing was employed. The first hypothesis on the relationship between ICT adoption and HIM yielded a calculated value of 6.8, surpassing the critical value of 3.84 at a 0.05 significance level. The second hypothesis exhibited a calculated value of 342.3 against a critical value of 7.815, while the third yielded 10.73 versus 3.841. With all calculated values exceeding critical values, the alternative hypotheses were accepted, confirming statistically significant associations between ICT/social media utilization and improved HIM professional performance. While limited to one facility, key conclusions provide practical insights and underscore technology's increasing, albeit complex, role in advancing healthcare information and data management. Further studies can build on these findings by expanding the research across Nigeria's healthcare system....
