Abstract
This study examined the effect of mass media on the socialization of secondary school students in Lafia Metropolis. Among other objectives of the study were to, investigate the various forms of mass media the secondary school students are exposed to, to determine the extent/level of exposure to mass media, to assess the role of mass media as a socialization agent, and determine the influence of mass media in their socialization process and to provide recommendations for policy and practice aimed at controlling the usage of the mass media among the secondary school students in Lafia Metropolis. The study adopted a descriptive survey method and data for the purpose of this study were obtained from both primary and secondary sources. A questionnaire was used as an instrument primarily for data collection. 244 participants were selected out of the entire population of the study area as the sample size using Taro Yamane sampling technique. Simple percentage method of data analysis was used to analyze the data obtained. Finding from the study revealed that the students make use of the mass media and the type of mass media common to them are their mobile phones and the usage of the internet. The lessons learned by the students contribute to their socialization process. Findings from the study showed that the mass media has been an effective tool in the socialization process of secondary school students in Lafia metropolis. The study, therefore, recommends among others that the management of the secondary schools should set up rules and regulations guiding the use of mass media in order to enhance effective socialization. Parental involvement in media use should also be used as a protective factor to promote positive impacts and mitigate its negative effects....
