Abstract
Maintaining confidentiality is vital for patient trust and effective healthcare. This study investigated the availability of confidentiality measures for managing patient health information and examined the effects of breaches. Using a descriptive design and simple random sampling, 86 medical records staff were surveyed out of 110 in a hospital. Over 90% affirmed confidentiality's importance in healthcare. Most (81%) confirmed the availability of confidentiality measures, chiefly comprehensive policies (35.5%) and secured systems for storing information. Breaches erode patient trust, impair care quality, and raise ethical issues, worsening with advancing technology enabling improper access. Adoption of robust confidentiality policies, staff training, patient consent protocols, secured records systems, and sanctions for violations are essential to protect sensitive personal information. Though claimed, confidentiality practices appear deficient. Doctors must strengthen safeguards and inform patients of parameters and risks in this technologically advancing era. As shown, medical confidentiality remains an ethical cornerstone diligent efforts are warranted so it is not mere aspiration but daily practice, improving delivery and outcomes. More research into confidentiality perceptions, practices and interventions can illuminate this vital dimension of 21st century healthcare.
