This lack of understanding affects the status and sustainability of the HIM profession. This study aimed to evaluate the perception of HIM practices among health professional groups at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi, Anambra State, Nigeria. The specific objectives were to: 1) evaluate perceptions of HIM practices 2) ascertain views on HIM roles and responsibilities and 3) examine the impact of the HIM profession in the hospital. A survey was conducted among 125 healthcare professionals including nurses, doctors, lab scientists, pharmacists and HIM professionals at the hospital. Data was collected via questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive statistics. Most respondents (96%) agreed that HIM is integral to well-organized healthcare. However, 66% held negative perceptions due to issues like misfiled records. A majority recognized HIM roles in areas like facilitating information for patient care (81%) and fulfilling legal/administrative duties (53%). But only 48% rated HIM performance as excellent. Over half (58%) felt hospitals could function without HIM, conflicting with 42% who deemed HIM indispensable. The study found high awareness of HIM purposes, but negative perceptions existed due to factors like mishandling of records. Addressing issues around staff capabilities and conduct could improve recognition of HIM’s vital status. Enhanced training and regulations against underqualified personnel were recommended.
