Abstract
Poor training and development of health information management (HIM) professionals has been linked to poor performance and productivity, becoming a challenge for hospital management. This study examined the effects and challenges of HIM professional training and development at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi. Using a descriptive design and a sample of 50 staff, it aimed to ascertain the impacts of insufficient training on productivity, morale, stress, and knowledge. Results showed training boosted productivity (100% agreed), upgraded skills (96%), increased morale (72%), enabled occupational safety knowledge (86%), and stress management (80%). However, inadequate funding (82%), attitude issues (78%), politics (86%), and access barriers (80%) challenged training efforts. Achieving effective training requires sufficient funds (80%), good management (60%), knowledgeable facilitators (86%), and communicating benefits (82%). Statistical analysis also revealed training significantly impacted HIM professional productivity. Recommendations include integrating training as a core hospital activity to enhance HIM professionalism. In summary, although training challenges exist, it benefits productivity, skills, knowledge, morale, and stress management. Prioritizing funds and access to high-quality tailored training, while communicating advantages, can help hospital management maximize HIM professional performance....
