Abstract
Monitoring and evaluation (M&E) allows organizations to learn from experience, achieve better results, and be more accountable. However, Nigeria’s healthcare system lacks assessment and comparison due to insufficient M&E tools to determine resource utilization and professional coverage. This study examined the importance of M&E for improving healthcare services using a descriptive design. Questionnaires collected data from 53 health information managers at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital Nnewi. Analysis used descriptive statistics and chi-square tests. Results showed that 90.6% of respondents agreed M&E improves healthcare quality. Specifically, 64.2% cited improved decision-making, planning, performance, and results. The Federal Ministry of Health is the key M&E stakeholder. 94.3% confirmed barriers including personnel shortages (69.8%), inadequate funding (13.2%), and infrastructure. Recommendations include training health workers on M&E to achieve set goals and objectives. Healthcare organizations must regularly measure the quality of care and proactively engage patients and physicians. In conclusion, despite challenges, M&E allows learning from experience, better outcomes, and accountability. Prioritizing M&E tools, personnel, funding, infrastructure, and stakeholder engagement can enable assessment and comparisons to improve Nigeria’s healthcare delivery....
