Abstract
Accurate clinical coding is vital for monitoring health services, assessing morbidity, and estimating health service needs. However, health information managers face continuous challenges keeping up with coding changes, limiting coding quality and healthcare delivery. This study examined the impact of coding challenges on healthcare delivery at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi.  Fifty-three health records staff participated. A descriptive design and questionnaire were used. Data was analyzed with tables, percentages, and chi-square tests. Findings showed the major coding impacts were enabling statistical reporting and appropriate hospital resource allocation. However, the main challenges were illegible physician writing leading to incorrect coding, and lack of staff training, incentives, and motivation. Recommendations include increased training, incentives and motivation for coders. Hospital management should facilitate physician use of computerized diagnosis to mitigate poor handwriting and educate all staff on the critical role quality coding plays in care delivery. accurate clinical coding significantly impacts health monitoring, planning and delivery. But coder training gaps, motivation issues, and physician legibility problems obstruct quality coding. Resolving these barriers at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital is essential to leverage the documented benefits of reliable coding for improved patient services. This will require an organizational commitment to coder support and workflow changes to reduce illegibility issues....
