Some scholars agree that the effect is positive while others agree that it is negative. General objective of this study was to assess the effects of sports participation on the academic performance of secondary school students in Nnewi, Anambra State. Multistage sampling technique was used to enroll 167 respondents in this study. Data collections were obtained through structured questionnaires and SPSS version 22 was used for data analysis. Majority of the respondents indicated their views about football games, basketball, volleyball, tennis and badminton. 89.94% had good knowledge about football, 71.74% had good knowledge about basketball, 80.17% had good knowledge of volleyball, 94.09% had good knowledge about tennis and 98.40% had good knowledge of badminton. As regards students’ opinions on the role of sports participation on their academic performance 93.75% agreed that sports activities play a good role in students' lives, 54.45% agreed that students who engage in sports demonstrate excellent academic performance. In conclusion, this study is in tandem with the general perception about the effects of sports participation on the academic performance of students which is there is no general agreement on the effects sports participation has on students' academics.
