Abstract
Concrete is one of the world’s most used construction materials due to its versatility, durability and economy. Greenhouse gas like carbon IV oxides (CO2) leads to global warming and it contributes to about 65% of global warming. The global cement industry emits about 7% of greenhouse gas to the atmosphere. To reduce this environmental hazard, alternative binders are introduced as binders. The replacement proportion was from 5% to 20% for glass aggregates. A total number of 45 cubes were cast using nominal mix ratio of 1:2:4 with water cement ratio of 0.50 and tested for compressive strength at 7, 14, and 28 days. Water absorption tests were carried out at 7, 14 and 28 days of curing age. The results showed that at 28 days of 5% replacement of WGP, the compressive strength was 27.33MPa while that of the conventional concrete at 28 days was 25MPa. A mathematical model was carried out for Flexural strength. The flexural strength at 28 days for convectional concrete was 3.5MPa and at 5% replacement of WGP, the strength was 3.66MPa. It was deduced from the results obtained that the modified concrete attained optimum strength at 5% replacement. This research concludes that the waste glass powder, concrete has a higher strength and durability than conventional concrete and also recommends that the waste glass powder can be used as an alternative construction material for cement. ...
