Abstract
This study examines the impact of herdsmen-farmer conflict on the economic development of Omala Local Government Area of Kogi State. The objectives of this study are to examine the effect of herdsmen-farmer conflict on the people of Omala Local Government Area of Kogi State, and to examine the major causes of conflict between the herdsmen and farmers in Omala Local Government area. The population under the study is one hundred and forty-five thousand seven hundred (145,700) as the total population of the study area, and the sample size is 399 using Taro Yamane’s formula. The researcher adopts the primary source as the method of data collection. Simple percentage ratio was used in analyzing the different answers obtained in the questionnaires. The findings revealed that there are major causes of conflict between the people of Omala and herdsmen are lack of security of tenure and land grabbing by herdsmen, destruction of plantations by herdsmen through grazing activity, inadequate& poor management of the razing reserve, and poor conflict management capacity by local institutions. The following is recommendations were made by the researchers: Building of ranches as done in other countries of the world should be carried out by owners of cattle through the assistance of the government. Cattle owners are required to go for training on how to keep and breed their cattle in ranches, as this will not only increase their yield but also reduce tensions and destruction of another man’s source of livelihood or life....
