Abstract
Urbanization, a global phenomenon driven by population growth and economic development, has profound implications for the environment. As rural populations migrate to urban centers in search of employment opportunities and improved living standards, cities expand rapidly, leading to extensive land use changes, habitat fragmentation, and loss of biodiversity. This transformation often results in the conversion of natural landscapes into built environments, altering ecosystems and disrupting ecological balance.  These environmental stressors pose significant risks to public health, exacerbating respiratory diseases, waterborne illnesses, and environmental hazards, particularly in densely populated urban areas. In the context of Umuaka city, located in the Njaba Local Government Area, the environmental effects of urbanization are increasingly evident. The findings of this study underscore the urgent need for proactive measures to address environmental degradation and promote sustainable urban development. Policy interventions focused on enhancing infrastructure resilience, implementing green initiatives, and fostering community participation are essential to mitigate the adverse impacts of urbanization while fostering environmental stewardship. The study conducted in Umuaka city revealed a significant relationship between urbanization and environmental degradation, as evidenced by statistical analysis. The calculated value of 134.4, compared to the tabulated value of 26.296, suggests a meaningful association between urbanization and environmental degradation levels. This finding underscores the critical importance of addressing the environmental impacts of urbanization through evidence-based policies and targeted interventions. By acknowledging and acting upon the link between urbanization and environmental degradation, stakeholders can work towards creating healthier, more sustainable, and livable urban environments that promote the well-being of both current and future generations of Umuaka city residents....
