Abstract
The study evaluated the freedom of Information (FOI) law as it affects journalism practice in Pointer Newspaper Asaba. The study employed the survey research method and engaged both primary and secondary sources including a field survey with the use of questionnaires. A total of 100 journalists were selected from the Pointer Newspaper, Asaba, using the purposive sampling technique. Data gathered were analyzed by using tables and simple percentage. The study revealed that pointer journalist are aware of the contents and implications of the freedom of information (FOI) law on their journalistic duties to a high extent. The study also found that freedom of information law has its strength as it makes information readily available and accessible to the journalists and the public where hitherto they did not. However, it was also found that the strength of the FOI law is limited by some weaknesses which include its inability to expunge other obnoxious laws that militate against journalism practice. Some of the findings of the study therefore emphasized the need for some aspects of the FOI law, especially those provisions that contain nebulous and ambiguous concepts that are open to differing interpretations to be removed, and recommended that media organizations should organize conferences and workshops to educate and enlighten journalists and mass media practitioners on how to put the FOI law into practice in order to assist them in their journalistic tasks, amongst others....
