Abstract
Serum electrolyte concentration is among the most commonly used laboratory tests for assessment of a patient’s clinical conditions and disease states, because electrolyte balance in the body is essential for the normal functioning of cells and organs. Datura stramonium has been a useful plant in the treatment of so many diseases, but there seems to exist very little research on this plant in the area of serum electrolytes. The current studies examined the effects of levonorgestrel on the serum electrolytes of 20 albino rats divided into five groups of four (n  4) and treated with 100, 200, and 300 mg/kg body weight of the methanol leaves extracts of Datura stramonium. The studies showed the lowering effects of Datura stramonium on serum electrolyte levels. The result showed that chloride ion (Cl-) levels were significantly (p< 0.05) decreased from 91.75 ± 3.12 in the control (group 1) to 69.46 ± 46.30 (group 2). Calcium, Ca+ levels were also observed to decrease in a similar manner. Ca+ levels decrease from 9.81 ± 0.50 to 7.58 ± 1.83. Upon treatment with 100mg/kg of the methanol leaves extract of Datura stramonium, calcium and chloride levels were significantly (p< 0.05) increased to 9.53 ± 1.68 and 93.99 ± 1.12, respectively. Slightly lower levels of both chloride and calcium (46.34 ± 53.51 and 9.13 ± 0.74) were noticed upon treatment with 200mg/kg of the methanol leaves extract. Amazingly, increasing the dosage of the leaves extract of Datura stramonium to 300mg/kg elevated the levels of chloride (92.45 ± 2.37) and calcium (9.70 ± 0.89). This suggests that higher doses of the methanol leaves extract of Datura stramonium will increase the levels of calcium and chloride. ...
