Abstract
This study, titled"Management of Serial Publications in the National Library of Nigeria: A Case Study of Kano State Library," investigates the management practices, challenges, and technological contributions in handling serial publications at the Kano State Library. The research was guided by five objectives: assessing current management practices, identifying challenges, examining the role of technology, evaluating the impact on library users, and investigating staff training needs. A descriptive survey research design was employed, utilizing both quantitative and qualitative approaches. The population comprised library staff and users (students, researchers, and professionals) at the Kano State Library. A sample size of 70 respondents was selected using purposive sampling for staff and simple random sampling for users. Data was collected through a structured questionnaire titled"Questionnaire on the Management of Serial Publications in Kano State Library" and semi-structured interviews. Quantitative data was analyzed using descriptive statistics (frequency tables, percentages, and charts), while qualitative data was subjected to thematic analysis. Findings revealed that serial publications are primarily acquired through purchases (50%) and donations (28.6%), but challenges such as insufficient funding (57.1%), poor cataloging systems (35.7%), and lack of trained staff (42.9%) hinder effective management. Technology, including digital cataloging systems (42.9%) and online databases (35.7%), has improved access, though 21.4% of respondents reported no digital tool usage. User satisfaction was low, with 35.7% expressing dissatisfaction due to poor organization and limited access. Additionally, 28.6% of staff reported no training in serials management. Recommendations include increasing funding, enhancing staff training, adopting advanced digital tools, standardizing cataloging systems, and implementing user awareness programs to improve serial publication management....
