Abstract
This study investigated the relationship between motivation and job performance among library staff. The research was guided by five specific objectives to propose strategies to enhance motivation for improved staff job performance. A descriptive survey research design was adopted. The population consisted of 50 staff members (25 from the Library and Information Science Department and 25 from the University Library). Using purposive sampling technique, a sample size of 45 respondents was selected. Data was collected through a structured questionnaire titled"Motivational Factors and Staff Job Performance in Library Schools Questionnaire". The method of data analysis involved the use of descriptive statistics, including frequencies, percentages, and mean scores, with a 4-point Likert scale (acceptance benchmark set at 2.5). Findings revealed that staff demonstrated a high level of job performance, particularly in adhering to professional ethics and showing commitment. Key motivational factors identified included a good working environment, financial incentives, recognition, and promotion opportunities. The study established a strong positive relationship between motivation and job performance. Major challenges affecting motivation included inadequate salary, lack of promotion opportunities, poor working conditions, and work-related stress. Based on these findings, the study recommended regular salary increments, merit-based promotions, creation of a conducive working environment, provision of continuous professional development programs, and implementation of reward systems to recognize outstanding performance. The study concluded that strategic efforts to improve both intrinsic and extrinsic motivational factors are essential for enhancing staff productivity, commitment, and overall service delivery within library schools....
