Records management is a critical function in educational institutions, ensuring that accurate and accessible information supports administrative transparency, accountability, and strategic planning. The increasing demand for data-driven decisions in tertiary institutions necessitates a structured approach to managing academic, financial, and personnel records throughout their lifecycle. The research adopted a descriptive survey design, utilizing a structured questionnaire distributed to 14,000 respondents selected through simple random sampling. Data were analyzed using frequency tables and mean scores based on a 4-point Likert scale. The findings indicate that while Federal Polytechnic Nasarawa has made progress in digitizing records and maintaining accuracy, several challenges persist, including inconsistent formats, limited stakeholder involvement, lack of periodic audits, and insufficient staff training. Respondents generally agreed that digital systems enhance accessibility and efficiency, and that quality records significantly influence decision-making speed and effectiveness. However, concerns about security, funding, and policy implementation were also highlighted. The study recommends full digital transformation, regular audits, capacity building for staff, standardization of record formats, and the development of a comprehensive records management policy. These insights contribute to the broader discourse on information governance in Nigerian tertiary institutions and provide actionable recommendations for improving institutional efficiency and decision-making processes through better records management.
