Investigation into routine immunization default among women of child bearing age

Abstract
This study was carried out to examine the routine immunization default among women of childbearing age in Ikpoba Okha Local Government of Edo State. The study was specifically set to determine the extent of immunization coverage in lkpoba Okha local government of Edo State, ascertain the level of immunization completion among women of child bearing age in lkpoba Okha local government of Edo State, and investigate the factors associated with immunization default among women of childbearing age in lkpoba Okha local government of Edo State. The survey design was adopted and the simple random sampling techniques were employed in this study. The population size comprised of women in lkpoba Okha local government of Edo State. In determining the sample size, the researcher conveniently selected 147 respondents and 141 were validated. Self-constructed and validated questionnaire was used for data collection. The collected and validated questionnaires were analyzed using frequency tables and mean scores. The hypotheses were tested using Chi-square Statistical tool. The result of the findings reveals that there is poor immunization coverage in lkpoba Okha local government of Edo State. Likewise, the level of completed immunization among mothers in Ofagbe Community is low. Furthermore, the study revealed factors such as income level, educational background, distance from the routine immunization service point, ability to make decisions independently, and religious affiliation that are associated with immunization default among women of childbearing age in lkpoba Okha local government of Edo State. Therefore, it is recommended that the government ensure health sector reforms based on community needs, through addressing factors that are known to influence mothers/caregivers' decision to vaccinate their children, such as women's education, cost of health care (immunization) services, wealth index and religious affiliations.
