Abstract
Abuse of healthcare workers, particularly nurses, has become a significant concern in many hospitals worldwide, including Nigeria. This study aimed to assess the factors that influence the abuse of nurses by patients and their relatives at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Ituku-Ozalla. A descriptive cross-sectional survey design was employed, and data were collected from a sample of 100 nurses using a structured, self-administered questionnaire. The findings revealed that verbal abuse (81%) was the most common form of abuse experienced, followed by threats or intimidation (46%) and physical assault (19%). Contributing factors included staff shortages (80%), poor communication (74%), long waiting times (68%), and patient frustration (65%). The effects of abuse on nurses included emotional stress (79%), reduced job satisfaction (58%), and fear of patient interactions (34%). Despite the high prevalence, more than half of the respondents (51%) reported ignoring abuse, while only 29% reported incidents to management. The study concludes that nurse abuse in UNTH is driven by both systemic and interpersonal factors, with serious implications for nurse well-being and patient care. It recommends the implementation of targeted interventions such as improved staffing, better communication training, stronger security measures, and effective reporting systems to reduce the occurrence of abuse and improve the work environment for nurses. ...
