The population of the study comprised election statistics, media reports, party documents, and key stakeholders such as political analysts and party members. A purposive sampling technique was adopted to select relevant documents and data sources for analysis. The study employed a qualitative content analysis method to systematically examine patterns, themes, and narratives from the selected materials. Findings reveal that internal crises characterized by leadership tussles, lack of internal democracy, imposition of candidates, and zoning controversies contributed significantly to the fragmentation of the party and widespread defections to rival parties. These issues undermined party cohesion, eroded public confidence, and contributed to the PDP’s electoral defeats in the 2015, 2019, and 2023 general elections. The study concludes that intra-party conflicts weakened the PDP's institutional capacity to effectively mobilize support and compete in national elections. It recommends strengthening internal democratic practices, enforcing transparent and inclusive candidate selection processes, and establishing conflict resolution mechanisms to ensure unity and electoral competitiveness.
