Abstract
The adoption of Electronic Health Records (EHRs) has transformed healthcare delivery worldwide, promising improved efficiency, enhanced care coordination, and reduced medical errors. However, in many healthcare settings, particularly in developing countries, the benefits of EHRs are often undermined by misimplementation. This study analyzed the benefits of EHRs and examined the consequences of their misimplementation on healthcare delivery. A descriptive survey design was employed, with a study population of 1,000 healthcare professionals and a stratified random sample of 100 respondents. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequencies, percentages, and means. Findings revealed that while EHRs improve access to patient information, streamline workflow, and support clinical decision-making, misimplementation leads to increased workload, delays in care, higher error rates, reduced patient satisfaction, and potential data breaches. The major causes of misimplementation identified were inadequate staff training, poor system customization, weak technical infrastructure, resistance to change, and insufficient funding. The study concluded that successful EHR implementation requires a holistic approach that addresses both technological and human factors. Recommendations include continuous staff training, thorough needs assessment, stakeholder engagement, strengthening ICT infrastructure, adequate funding, and regular monitoring and evaluation.
