Abstract
This study investigates the impact of international procurement on the profitability of multinational companies, using Nestlé PLC in Lagos, Nigeria as a case study. International procurement, or global sourcing, is a strategic tool used by multinational corporations (MNCs) to reduce costs, improve efficiency, and maintain competitive advantage. The research explores how Nestlé's procurement strategies—especially its reliance on international suppliers—affect its cost structure, supply chain efficiency, and overall financial performance. The study identifies key benefits of international procurement, such as cost reduction through economies of scale, access to high-quality raw materials, and enhanced product innovation. However, it also highlights significant challenges, including currency fluctuations, logistical complexities, regulatory compliance issues, and geopolitical risks. These factors can increase procurement costs and disrupt supply chain operations, affecting profitability. Using both qualitative and quantitative data from primary sources—including interviews and structured questionnaires—and secondary sources such as company reports and academic literature, the study analyzes the relationship between international procurement practices and profitability. Hypothesis testing confirms that international procurement significantly influences cost structure and profitability while presenting notable supply chain management challenges. The findings suggest that effective international procurement strategies, supported by robust risk management, supplier diversification, and technological integration, can enhance profitability and competitive advantage for MNCs like Nestlé PLC operating in emerging markets.
