Abstract
Food insecurity has become a growing challenge in Nigeria, especially among low-income households. This study, titled“An Assessment of Food Insecurity Among Low-Income Families in Nigeria: Evidence from the Tinubu Administration,” investigated the socio-economic characteristics of households, prevalence of food insecurity, coping strategies, and the perceived effects of recent government policies. A descriptive survey design was adopted, and data were collected from a sample of 100 households through structured questionnaires. Analysis was carried out using descriptive statistics (frequency and percentage). Findings revealed that 68% of households experienced moderate to severe food insecurity, with most earning below 30,000 monthly and spending over 70% of their income on food. Common coping strategies included meal reduction, skipping meals, and reliance on less preferred foods. The removal of fuel subsidies and exchange rate reforms were widely perceived as having worsened food insecurity, though palliatives provided temporary relief. The study concludes that food insecurity among low-income households is severe under current economic conditions. It recommends strengthening social protection measures, supporting smallholder farmers, controlling food inflation, and improving access to nutritious food. Development agencies and households are also encouraged to adopt food banks, cooperative buying, and home gardening initiatives....
