Manual monitoring of mask compliance in public spaces is inefficient, error-prone, and not scalable, highlighting the need for automated solutions. This project presents the design and implementation of a real-time face mask detection system using Python, OpenCV, and deep learning techniques. The system integrates computer vision and convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to automatically detect human faces from live video streams and classify them as“Mask” or“No Mask.” A pre-trained MobileNetV2 model was fine-tuned for mask classification, while OpenCV’s Haar Cascade and DNN modules were employed for face detection. The system was developed and tested using a labeled dataset of masked and unmasked faces, achieving high accuracy in real-time predictions. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the system in different lighting conditions and environments, with immediate feedback provided through annotated bounding boxes on detected faces. The proposed solution offers a cost-effective, scalable, and non-intrusive method for enforcing mask policies in public spaces such as hospitals, schools, shopping malls, and transportation hubs.
