Abstract
The research study was on the investigation of the factors responsible for teenage pregnancy among adolescent girls in Ekwashi community, Ohaukwu government area, Ebonyi state. The reason for the study is due to the high rate of teenage girls reporting to the hospital/health centers with a history of absence of menstrual period, incomplete abortion and labour complications. In addition, the issue of teenage pregnancy is a completely challenging one, for families, health workers, educators, societies, government and even adolescent girls themselves. The main objectives of this study are to investigate the factors responsible for teenage pregnancy and to map out the strategies that can help to reduce teenage pregnancy among secondary school girls in Ekwashi community. The significance of the study is to enlighten adolescent girls in Ekwashi community to know the factors that contribute to teenage pregnancy, thus eliminating ignorance of sex and its resultant effects. The study adopted a descriptive research method and utilized simple random sampling techniques to select the sample size. The instrument used was a structured questionnaire, which was administered to 150 respondents, after which 109 were retrieved. The data were analyzed using the rating scale, precisely like a scale. The results of the data were interpreted, from the observations made by the researchers, the rate of teenage pregnancy is on the increase, which is a result of poverty, poor parental guidance, ignorance of reproductive health education, peer group influences etc. Leading to an increase in morbidity and mortality rate, school drop out, anemia of mothers and of the fetus etc. But if the following recommendations are employed, they will be well informed and educated on the factors responsible for teenage pregnancy, counselling in Ekwashi community, preaching of abstinence by the religious bodies and parents, public enlightenment to create awareness on teenage pregnancy, inclusion of sex educational curriculum, etc....
