Abstract
This research work was conducted to examine the Influence of Multichoice DSTV on the Moral Values of Nigerian Youths. A survey research design (qualitative and quantitative) was employed. The sample size used for this study consisted of 150 respondents within the age range of 18-35 years, determined through a random sampling method and a ball-spinning method. 150 questionnaires were distributed with the help of research assistants, but only 145 of the questionnaires were retrieved. The quantitative and qualitative methods of data collection were used. Data was analyzed using a percentage frequency distribution table, both manually and with SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences). The hypothesis was tested using inferential statistical tools of Chi-Square to analyze the data. The study clearly showed that youths agree that Western television programmes entertain them more than the Nigerian locally produced programmes. Similarly, it was also found that there was a significant relationship between youth watching/viewership of programmes on Western television stations and the lifestyles the Nigerian youth exhibit. The findings further revealed that Western television films show that there is glamorization of risky behaviours like excessive drinking and sexual promiscuity on Western television programmes. The study also found that the majority of Nigerian youths desire to live the kind of life that is portrayed in Western TV programmes. The sad side of the exposure to foreign media on the culture of a society is that the glorification of the Western lifestyle goes side by side with the condemnation of the local culture. The study recommends the promotion of African moral values on Nigerian television. The Nigerian Broadcasting Commission (NBC) should effectively censor foreign programmes on Nigerian TV channels, starting with Multichoice DSTV....
