Abstract
The main objective of the study is to ascertain the influence of social networking sites and the library as a gateway to information access and knowledge sharing in public libraries in South-east Nigeria. The research design adopted the descriptive survey design. The sampled population for this study is 138 respondents (library users) who were randomly selected from the stratified libraries, with the exception of the librarians who were purposively selected in the south-east states: Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo. The reliability of the instrument was determined using Cronbach's Alpha. Personal observation, interview and questionnaires were used in this study to obtain responses and opinions on the part of the respondents given the schedules. Percentage and weighted mean were used as the method of data analysis. From 2.50 and above were accepted in the weighted mean, while anything below 2.50 was rejected. The research hypotheses were tested at the 0.05 level of significance. The study, however, revealed that Social networking sites and library 2.0 as a gateway to information access and knowledge sharing have a huge influence on whether public libraries can remain relevant in the information industry or not. The non-availability of social networking sites and consequently library 2.0 means that the library’s online visibility is very low. Without a well-trained library staff on the use of ICT, the library cannot serve or meet the needs of its physical clients, let more of its online clients. However, the researcher opines that  Public libraries should employ fresh graduates from library school, as these are young and understand the needs of their peers in terms of providing library services through social networking sites....
