Abstract
This study analyzed two water samples collected from household domestic water supplies in Awka, Anambra State and tested for pH, Conductivity, Hardness and Total Suspended Solids. The objective was to assess the physicochemical and heavy metal content of the samples and compare them with WHO and NSDWQ standards. The parameters - pH, Temperature, Conductivity, Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), Total Hardness, Free Chlorine and Alkalinity were measured following the method of Rahmanian et al. (2015) using the Myron L multiparameter kit. The samples were filtered through a Whatman 0.45 µm membrane filter paper. The final volume was adjusted to 100 mL with double-distilled water and stored for analysis. Heavy metals were analyzed using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (AAS) following AOAC (2003) guidelines. The results showed that both water samples had slightly acidic pH values (6.2 and 6.0), which are below the WHO recommended minimum of 6.5. The heavy metals analyzed showed the presence of iron and copper in both samples, but their values were within the WHO safe limits. No traces of cadmium, lead, chromium or arsenic were detected. TDS and conductivity were within acceptable limits, indicating low salinity. The total hardness, chloride, calcium and magnesium concentrations were all within permissible levels. These results suggest that the water samples are generally safe for domestic use but should be monitored regularly, especially due to the slightly acidic pH. It is, however, recommended that to ensure safety, the use of effective water treatment methods before consumption, such as pH adjustment, should be considered, as well as routine monitoring of water quality should be carried out....
