This study presents the design and implementation of a machine learning-based phishing email detection system aimed at improving email security through intelligent classification. The system leverages supervised learning algorithms, including Naïve Bayes, Support Vector Machine (SVM), Random Forest, XGBoost, and deep learning models such as Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN), Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), and a hybrid BERT-LSTM model. A comprehensive dataset was compiled from reliable sources, including PhishTank, the Enron Corpus, and the Spam Assassin dataset, encompassing both legitimate and phishing emails. Preprocessing techniques such as tokenization, stop-word removal, and lemmatization were applied, followed by feature extraction using methods like Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency (TF-IDF) and word embeddings. Experimental results showed that the hybrid BERT-LSTM model achieved superior accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score compared to traditional models, demonstrating its robustness in identifying complex phishing patterns. The system was implemented using Python and integrated into a prototype interface that allows users to input or upload emails for real-time phishing detection. The findings confirm that machine learning, particularly deep contextual models, significantly enhances phishing detection performance over conventional methods.
