Abstract
Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) pose a significant public health challenge among youth in Nigeria, particularly in rural communities like Bokani, Mokwa Local Government Area, Niger State. This study identifies the causes, effects, and preventive measures of STDs among youth aged 15–24 in Bokani, a community with limited healthcare access and prevalent socio-cultural barriers. Using a descriptive cross-sectional research design, data were collected from 200 respondents via a structured questionnaire, analyzed using SPSS version 17, and presented in frequency tables and charts. Findings reveal high awareness of STD causes, with 90% recognizing unprotected sex, 85% acknowledging multiple sexual partners, and 80% linking lack of knowledge to STD transmission. Poverty (70%) and limited healthcare access (77.7%) were also identified as significant risk factors. Effects include infertility (70%), increased HIV risk (90%), social stigma (80%), and mental health issues (70%). Preventive measures like condom use (90%), abstinence (95%), and monogamy (85%) were widely recognized, but only 50% reported easy access to condoms, and 55% had not attended prevention programs. The study highlights the interplay of socio-cultural, economic, and behavioral factors in STD prevalence and underscores barriers such as stigma and limited healthcare infrastructure. Recommendations include expanding youth-friendly health services, enhancing sexual health education, improving condom access, and addressing socioeconomic vulnerabilities to reduce STD burden among Bokani’s youth. These findings provide actionable insights for policymakers, health workers, and community leaders to develop targeted interventions. ...
