Abstract
Early marriage remains a pressing issue affecting the educational, psychological, and socio-economic well-being of young girls, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. This study investigated the knowledge and perceived effects of early marriage among female students in Ilorin East Local Government Area, Kwara State, Nigeria. A descriptive cross-sectional survey design was employed for the study. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire administered to 100 female students selected through purposive sampling from selected secondary schools in the local government area. Descriptive statistics such as frequency and percentage were used to analyze the data, and findings were presented in tables and charts. The results revealed that all respondents (100%) correctly identified early marriage as a union before age 18, and 98% had heard of the practice, indicating a high level of awareness. Poverty (90%), lack of education (73%), cultural traditions (86%), religious beliefs (87%), and peer pressure (79%) were identified as primary causes. Furthermore, 89% of respondents agreed that early marriage ends a girl's education, while 81% associated it with health complications. Other reported effects included emotional distress (63%), financial dependency (100%), and domestic conflicts (90%). The study concluded that while awareness of early marriage is high among female students, socio-economic and cultural factors continue to promote its occurrence. It recommends intensified public sensitization, economic empowerment programs for families, strict enforcement of child protection laws, and integration of sexuality education into school curricula. These interventions are crucial in mitigating the practice and safeguarding the rights and development of the girl-child. ...
