Abstract
This study assessed awareness and acceptance of the human papillomavirus vaccine among female secondary school students in Ilorin West Local Government Area, Ilorin, Kwara State. A descriptive research design was employed. The study involved the collection of data from teenagers in the Ilorin West Local Government using a structured questionnaire. The collected data were analyzed using statistical tools, such as descriptive statistics. The major results obtained from this study, 91(91%) of the respondents have heard about cervical cancer, while 9(9%) have not 81(81%) have heard about Human Papillomavirus infection and 19(19%) have not 78(78%) were that Human Papillomavirus infections are caused by various human papillomaviruses and 22(22%) of them responses were incorrect, while 36(12%) said they are using barrier methods and 91 respondents representing 89(89%) of the respondents comfortable to receive any dose of HPV vaccine, while 11(11%) did not feel comfortable with it. In conclusion, it was shown that the majority of the students, representing 91% have heard about cervical cancer. 81% of the students have good knowledge that the HPV vaccine can prevent cervical cancer. While over 86% are willing to get the HPV vaccine. Recommendations were made that the Ministry of Health should increase funding to the cervical cancer prevention programme since it's one of the major threats to women's health. They should also come up with education programmes which will target women in schools, colleges, churches and market place.
