Abstract
This study was conducted to assess the knowledge, attitude, and practice of malaria prevention among pregnant women attending antenatal care (ANC) at General Hospital, Ikole-ekiti, Ekiti State. The specific objectives were to determine their level of knowledge of malaria prevention, evaluate their attitudes toward preventive strategies, examine their preventive practices, and identify the barriers influencing the adoption of malaria prevention measures. A descriptive cross-sectional research design was used, involving 400 pregnant women selected through simple random sampling. Data were collected using a structured, self-administered questionnaire that covered demographic characteristics, knowledge, attitudes, practices, and perceived barriers. Ethical approval was obtained, and data were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations. The study found that awareness of malaria was universal (100%). Knowledge of malaria prevention was relatively high, with 82% aware of insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) and 80% aware that malaria can be prevented during pregnancy. However, only 51% had heard of IPTp-SP, and just 60% knew the recommended doses. Attitudes were positive overall, with 91.8% believing preventive drugs were safe and ANC attendance important. Preventive practices were encouraging: 77.8% regularly used ITNs, 76.2% had taken at least one IPTp-SP dose, and 89% used mosquito repellents. Key barriers included cost (79.3%), availability of preventive tools (76.2%), cultural beliefs (89%), and inadequate healthcare services (78.3%). The study concludes that although pregnant women show good awareness, favorable attitudes, and strong preventive practices, gaps in knowledge and systemic challenges limit optimal malaria prevention. It is recommended that government and health professionals strengthen ANC health education, improve access to IPTp-SP and ITNs, address cultural beliefs through community sensitization, and ensure better healthcare service delivery to enhance malaria prevention among pregnant women in Ikole-ekiti. ...
