Abstract
Self-medication is a universal issue that poses health risks to both the pregnant woman and her fetus, yet pregnant women indulge in self-medication in developing countries, especially in Nigeria. Therefore, this study was designed to assess the factors influencing self-medication practices among antenatal attendees in the Comprehensive Health Centre Okelele, Ilorin, Kwara State. A descriptive cross-sectional study design was used for this study, and a purposive sampling technique was used to select 183 respondents from the study population who met the inclusion criteria. A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data and there was 100%. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics and the level of significance was set at 0.05. The study revealed that self-medication among the antenatal attendees during the previous and current pregnancies was 123 (67.2%) and 114(62.3%), respectively. Drugs commonly used in self-medication among respondents were paracetamol 116 (63.4%), anti-malaria 73 (39.9%), and cough syrup 68 (37.2%). The major factors influencing self-medication among respondents were availability of non-prescribed drugs publicly 166 (90.7%), prior experience with the drugs 165 (90.2%), buying drugs at a cheaper price in a nearby shop 163(89.1%), availability of old prescription 160 (87.4%), suggestion from friends and family 160 (87.4%) and waiting time at health facility 160 (87.4%). A significant association was found between self-medication and parity, as well as the level of education of respondents. Therefore, it was recommended that the government and health care providers should address these factors promoting self-medication among women to reduce the health risk. ...
