This study investigated the knowledge, risk factors and perceived effects of stroke among the aged in Ilorin South Local Government Area of Kwara State. It focused on evaluating the knowledge, awareness of risk factors, and perceived consequences of stroke among this demographic. A descriptive cross-sectional survey design was employed using a structured questionnaire administered to 150 elderly respondents aged 65 years and above. Data were analyzed using frequency tables, percentages, and bar charts to interpret the distribution and perception of stroke knowledge, risk factors, and its effects. The findings revealed that 75% of the respondents had heard of stroke, and 68% demonstrated an understanding of its causes. High awareness levels were reported for major risk factors such as hypertension (89%), diabetes (90%), smoking (88%), obesity (86%), and alcohol consumption (85%). However, lower awareness was noted for physical inactivity (61%) and emotional stress (73%) as risk factors. Respondents also recognized the wide-ranging effects of stroke, including paralysis (92%), speech impairment (99%), memory loss (90%), and dependency on others for daily activities (97%). Additionally, 69% acknowledged stroke’s potential emotional impact, such as depression. The study concludes that while awareness of stroke and its major medical risk factors is high among the elderly in Ilorin South, there are gaps in the understanding of lifestyle and emotional risk contributors. It is recommended that public health authorities intensify educational efforts that highlight less recognized factors, promote routine health screenings, and strengthen psychosocial support systems for stroke prevention and rehabilitation. ...Preview Download Preview +Other Community Health project topics and materials you might be interested in»Knowledge and awareness of the effects of narcotic drug use among students of Federal Polytechnic Idah»Effect of immunization in children between the ages of 0-5 in family health centre Idah Local Government Area Kogi State»The effect of abortion on female students in College of Health Sciences and Technology Idah, Kogi»Factors influencing the attitude of women towards family planning - case study of Oke Eiri, Atan Local Government Area»Problem of pregnancy and abortion on girl child education in Nigeria»Effect of malnutrition among children under five years of age in Patigi community of Patigi local government area of Kwara state»Attitude of couple toward modern family planning practice in Birnin Gwari, Birnin Gwari local government, Kaduna state»Importance of exclusive breast feeding on the health of an infant - case study of Idah local government area of Kogi state»Knowledge of protein energy malnutrition and its prevention among mothers with children below five years of age in Ubiegbe Community Idah, Lga, Kogi state»The impact of community health works in elderly condition in Ungogo local government»Causes, effects and control of communicable diseases in secondary schools»A study on the causes, effects, prevention and control of threatened abortion among childbearing mothers ages (18-45) years in Gilead Children Hospital»Causes and effects of drug abuse among adolescent in Amede community»Assessment of prevalence malaria among the patients attending Tofa comprehensive hospital»Assessing the mother knowledge on the benefit of breast feeding among children 0 - 24 months - a case study of Matoya village Maigatari local government, Jigawa state
