Many organizations, however, lack the resources and expertise to deploy full-scale security monitoring solutions. This project focuses on the simulation of an intrusion detection system and centralized log management using Cisco Packet Tracer as a cost-effective and educational approach. The system was designed using a router, switch, client computers, and a server configured as a Syslog server. Intrusion detection was simulated through the use of access control lists to block unauthorized Telnet access, while logging mechanisms were enabled to forward security events to a centralized log server. The implementation demonstrated how suspicious activities can be detected, blocked, and recorded for monitoring and analysis. The results show that Cisco Packet Tracer can effectively simulate basic intrusion detection and log management concepts, making it suitable for teaching and learning network security at the Higher National Diploma level.
