Abstract
Clubfoot, medically termed congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV), is a frequent musculoskeletal birth deformity of the foot, occurring in 1–6 out of every 1,000 live births. The Ponseti technique has become the preferred non-surgical treatment, offering high success rates and reducing the need for surgery. Parental satisfaction, however, is a key determinant of treatment adherence and overall outcomes. This study assessed parental satisfaction with Ponseti treatment at the Plaster Unit of General Hospital, Ilorin, focusing on knowledge, satisfaction levels, and influencing factors. A prospective cross-sectional design was used, involving 88 parents of children receiving Ponseti care. Data were collected via structured questionnaires covering demographics, awareness of clubfoot, satisfaction with treatment, and factors shaping satisfaction. Analysis was conducted using SPSS version 20 with descriptive and inferential statistics. Results showed that 85% of parents were aware of clubfoot, with health workers and mass media serving as primary information sources. About 70% recognized conservative management as the preferred approach, while 90% were familiar with the Ponseti method. Satisfaction levels were generally high: 68.75% reported being satisfied, 30% were neutral, and only 1.25% expressed dissatisfaction. Influential factors included the attitude of health workers (26.25%), facility location (18.75%), waiting time (26.25%), and prior experience with Ponseti treatment (2.5%). Compliance with treatment instructions, such as brace use and cast care, was also strong. The study concludes that parental satisfaction with the Ponseti method is high, reinforcing its effectiveness in managing clubfoot. Nonetheless, challenges remain in healthcare accessibility and provider communication. Recommendations include strengthening awareness campaigns, improving service accessibility, establishing structured follow-up systems, and enhancing healthcare provider training in communication and patient-centered care ...
