Abstract
Colles’ fractures, defined by the dorsal displacement of the distal radius, are among the most frequent wrist injuries in elderly individuals. They typically occur following low-energy trauma, such as simple falls, and present a significant challenge in orthopedic care. For stable fractures, closed reduction and casting remain the preferred treatment option because of their non-invasive nature, affordability, and accessibility, especially in resource-limited settings. This study investigates the outcomes of patients with Colles’ fractures treated using closed reduction and casting at Kwara State University Teaching Hospital (KWASUTH). Employing a retrospective case study design, the medical records of two patients aged 18 years and above were reviewed. The data collected included demographic information, fracture classification, radiographic findings, and functional recovery assessed through Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand (DASH) scores. Complications such as malunion, wrist stiffness, and persistent pain were also documented to evaluate the effectiveness of this management approach. Findings suggest that closed reduction and casting generally provide satisfactory results, with acceptable fracture alignment and functional recovery in most cases. Nevertheless, complications remain a concern, particularly in older patients with osteoporosis, where bone fragility increases the risk of malunion and long-term impairment. The study emphasizes the importance of structured rehabilitation programs and consistent follow-up care to minimize these risks and improve patient outcomes. In conclusion, closed reduction and casting continue to be effective for managing Colles’ fractures, but careful patient monitoring and individualized treatment strategies are essential.
