Abstract
Students’ attendance at school and their classes plays a decisive role in achieving the desired result from education and training activities. The study aimed at assessing the indicators and outcomes of school absenteeism among students in selected nursing institutions in Kwara State. Faucet theory of absenteeism was adopted. Concurrent triangulation mixed method approach was adopted. Paper balloting, purposive and simple random sampling techniques were used to select the institutions, the class level and respondents. Using Taro Yamane's formula, sample size of 179 out of 274 students were selected within the 3 selected nursing institutions. Quantitative data was collected using a self-structured questionnaire, with a reliability coefficient of 0.868 and analysed using SPSS version 25 for descriptive and inferential statistics, presented in tables and figures. Using purposive sampling, 23 participants were selected for the qualitative study. Qualitative data was collected through FGDs using an interview guide and analysed using Nvivo version 15. Using the mean score, the findings reported key indicators of absenteeism to be stress(2.92), workload(2.80) and illness(2.61). Despite these challenges, students reported positive perceptions of their academic performance(3.86) and clinical skills(3.79). Strategies to reduce absenteeism include enhancing teaching methods(4.40) and fostering a supportive learning environment(4.38). Qualitative findings highlighted themes such as economic factors, class scheduling and teaching quality as influences on attendance(as mentioned by 9, 11 and 7 participants respectively).
